We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer to share our vision and scale our innovative technology globally to make waste the fuel of the future.

Location:  Bristol – due to the nature of lab-based research, you are likely to be required in the office 5 days a week, but there is capacity for home working depending on the research activities.

The role will also require someone who is happy to travel to trial sites that may be across the UK.

Type of contract: Permanent & full-time 

Salary range: £48,000 – £55,000 – depending on experience 

Holiday: 25 days plus bank holidays

About the role

The role suits someone who wants to work at the forefront of innovation in a fast paced environment. The role is for someone who enjoys a hands-on role and loves being involved in field/pilot research as well as the lab.

Based on the individual’s experience, you will be optimising our process to maximise biogas generation for wastewater treatment systems or high solids waste streams to upgrade anaerobic digestion sites. You will work within a diverse engineering team of biologists, chemists, engineer and AI/ML experts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluating and optimising Electro Methanogenic Reactors from TRL 5-9
  • Oversee research projects related to wastewater treatment or anaerobic digestion using  Electro Methanogenic Reactors.
  • Create technical reports of field and commercial units for comparison against alternative technologies.
  • Evaluate, implement, and integrate new research/processes to enhance Electro Methanogenesis.
  • Drive excellence in research methodologies and project management practices
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate Electro Methanogenesis developments into commercial systems.
  • Support commercial/pilot commissioning and optimisation through large scale testing.
  • Work closely with industry partners and collaborators to enhance research capabilities and contribute to the growth of the Electro Methanogenesis field.
  • Travelling to field/pilot sites to support in the optimisation of commercial units.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Proven experience in anaerobic wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, electro methanogenesis, biological and or electro-chemical treatment
  • Experience in scaling up industrial technologies/processes (TRL 5-9).
  • Self-motivated individual with project management experience and lead/oversee multiple projects/people.
  • Experience evaluating and optimising wastewater/anaerobic digestion systems in the lab and field.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Proven problem-solving ability that can work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Minimum master’s level qualification, Ph.D. desirable in chemical/process engineering, bioprocess, electrochemistry, anaerobic digestion, wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge in biological electrochemical systems, microbial electrolysis cells, microbial fuel cells, and Electro Methanogenic Reactors is a bonus.
